IRACEMA, UMA TRANSA AMAZÔNICA

Indigenous teenager Iracema, struggling to make ends meet as a sex worker, joins the macho truck driver Tião Brasil Grande on a journey transporting illegal hardwood. Together, they travel across Brazil on the newly constructed Trans-Amazonian Highway. This Cinema Novo road-trip hybrid examines a nation developing at the expense of its Indigenous women, with extractive capitalism driving deforestation and forest fires. Fifty years after its original release, this digitally restored version of Iracema arrives at a pivotal moment, coinciding with COP30, which—like part of the film—will take place in Belém, at the mouth of the Amazon River.
